A FRESH FALL LOOK IN FIVE SIMPLE STEPS
I absolutely love this time of year! Call me goofy but the beginning of a new season is such an exciting thing to me! When August and September are just so dog gone hot, I really look forward to October and the change in the weather. Then I get excited about updating my home with a fresh fall look in just five simple steps!
But I have to admit that in years past, I have gotten a little overwhelmed with all of the decor that’s out there. And trying to decide what to do, where to begin, and how much I want to take down just to bring out again after the season changes again, can be a bit much for me.
So I developed some simple rules for me to follow to keep it easy and fun! Then I can enjoy what I love most about each season and highlight it.
I’ll share my “rules” with you which are actually more like steps. My hope is that if you’re a bit like me, you might be able to incorporate the essentials of the season and be able to keep it simple yet beautiful!
FIVE STEPS TO BRING IN A FRESH FALL LOOK
1. Change Your Color Palette
I truly enjoy each season so much that I like to start out slow like a snowball and then before you know it I’m rolling down a hill at full speed. So as the summer comes to an end, I transition by adding warmer earth tones. Colors like golden yellows, tans, browns, oranges and rusts that are starting to show up it seems slowly but surely.
It makes such a nice pop of color up against the neutral palette of our home’s decor. But as you know, as fall slowly starts, everything is not all dead and dreary outside. In fact, the summer yard is bursting at its seams. So I like to reflect what is going on outside and bring it inside the home with my decor and even table settings. So I mix the whites and creams with the woods and burnt golden colors that will keep slowly evolving as the season changes.
There’s actually another reason I transition slowly into each season instead of full steam ahead. I’m kind of sad that I have to say goodbye, especially to summer actually. My heart seems to want to say, “Good bye summer BBQ’s, I’ll miss you so!” “Good bye cool and refreshing dips in the pool after working hard gardening in the yard, it sure was fun while it lasted!” But then there’s the, “Hello fall fire pits with roasting marshmallows and drinking cups of hot cider.” “Hello cozy flannel throws and autumn walks.” So much to look forward to seems to make it all better.
2. Add More Texture with Fabrics
So as I kiss summer good bye with a sweet farewell, I focus on the inside a a bit more. I think our little farmhouse is much happier after it’s been somewhat neglected. I mean frankly, during the warmer weather months, we really live outside mostly.
Since the weather isn’t all cold and freezing yet, I went with a warm and cozy look that’s a more fresh fall style with warmer colors but lighter fabrics. And because of my throw pillow fetish, it’s super easy to switch things in and out when you’re only changing pillow covers.
I love mixing soft flannels, with thicker tweeds and even touches of the ever so wonderful plaids. Then I love this cable knit throw blanket with a warm cinnamon color! It just cozy’s up the living room for snuggling time while watching fun fall movies and eating popcorn.
3. Bring the Outdoors Inside
In the garden I’m finding beautiful hydrangeas that have changed from pinks to more of a green and persimmon color that literally takes my breath away! Oh and the leaves on many bushes have just started to turn a beautiful rusty red color that I brought in for that perfect fall feel! Woodsy branches gathered together reflect the bareness of fallen leaves from their trees. Then the beauty of mums that are starting to become available everywhere literally come in so many different colors to discover.
4. Refresh Your Wreaths
Make a fresh wreath or purchase a new one to update your new seasonal look. It could be a dried corn husk wreath, a beautiful woodsy brown nut wreath, or a fresh oat grass and creamy dried flower wreath like my new one here that I love so much!
Put one on your door and a few in your home. Layer it against an old window, or even an old barn gate hung on the wall as an accent piece. Either way, a wreath can really put the stamp and seal of fall for sure!
5. Add Autumn Accents to Finish Off a Fresh Fall Look
Bring in some of your favorite accessories that you’ve stored and love to revisit again. You could also donate or pass down some old things. That way you could update your vignettes with something new that’s a representation of your life now.
I have a few sentimental treasured trinkets that I love to revisit every year. This old white vase that my mother in law gave me is so special. She has passed on now so it’s even more precious to me. I also love this oval wooden bread bowl that my sweet mama gave to me too.
Filling it with pumpkins, hydrangeas, and pine cones adds so much to this fall vignette I feel.
This transition from cool, clean, crisp and summery vignettes to more of a warm and cozy feel will get you excited for the change. All you’ll need is some fall colored foliage, wreaths, and the soft glow of candlelight to breathe life into this fall season!
Hope this helps get you into the spirit of fall my friend.
Happy Day to you!
